The same arms dealers approach the Israelis, and warn the Israelis that the 'terrorists' are 'known' to have this, that and these weapons. Israelis gladly slurp up to the american trough to buy grossly overpriced gadgetry using central government subsidies from both sides.
The Israeli Prime Minister du jour needs a boost in the polls. Prime Minister gives a wink or a nod at the same arms dealers. The arms dealers give the "pro Arab or Persian individuals" a wink or a nod and presto!
Every over vocal Jewish american turns on The Christian News Network, NPR, or reads the NYT, and starts to whine, 'Poor, besieged, beleaguered Israelis!'
In any standoff, the duty to step down is incumbent on the stronger. The stronger party can step back with more confidence, less risk.
In the case of the Israeli/Arab/Persian conflict of more than a millenium, the Israelis bear the burden to resolve the conflict because
- the Israelis speak and act with one voice, one people, one government, one nation, one religion.
- the Hebrews have experienced enslavement, persecution and abuse from many different cultures...and they are stronger for it.
- the Jews are أهل الكتاب.
- recorded Hebrew history predates the other cultures in the conflict.
- you are better than this.
- The Persians and the Arabs have hit a pop fly. All you have to do is catch it.
The 'Palestinian Problem' is a gift. Many consider the Palestinians to be the most difficult folks in the region. The Palestinians have been pushed up against Israeli borders to harrass the Holy Land. So what do the Hebrews do? They play into the hand of their First Testament terrors. The Jews could show the world the way. Instead, they are showing the world one reason why Chancellor Hitler killed six million of us.
The Israeli response reminds me of the initial Latter Day Saints (LDS) response to same gender marriage. A people pushed accross a continent in the 1800s, the LDS refused to accept same gender marriage in the 1900s. The Jews of Europe were persecuted, and now pass on that persecution.
In fact, and perversely, Hitler had been championing the creation of a Jewish state in Palestine for the best part of two decades. In the spring of 1938, he spoke in support of a policy of emigration of German Jews to the Middle East and the formation of a new state to be their home.71 Indeed, in the late 1930s, a high-level mission, led by Adolf Eichmann, had even been sent to meet with Zionist agents in Palestine to discuss how an accommodation could be reached that would solve what was often called “the Jewish question” once and for all. With considerable irony, Eichmann—who was later executed in Israel for crimes against humanity—found himself discussing how to boost emigration of Jews from Germany to Palestine, something which seemed in the interests both of the anti-Semitic Nazi leadership and of the leadership of the Jewish community in and around Jerusalem.72

A fence not made by hands defines a religion, culture, language, people. Having a strong fence can create a strong people, and we Jews have had one of the strongest fences around for the longest period of time. Nonetheless, if that fence is being used against you, as the Arabs and Persians are using the Jewish fence against the Palestinians, that fence is doing your religion a disservice. The problem is tailor made to enable the Jews to show the world that they can be more kind, more generous, more thoughtful than the Persians and the Arabs are to their own.
The Isreali government could halve the defence budget. Return the money to the taxpayers of Israel (which includes many non-Jews). The other half of the defence budget could be used building truly constructive businesses and social programs in the region. Don't just throw money at the problem, like the American central government has done with our welfare wives. Reconstruction requires building bonds between Israelis, Persians and Arabs, particularly the younger generation.
We can do this. We can't do it without you.
The Lyrics for Secondary Waltz by Mark Knopfler have been translated into 1 languages
The school Christmas party is coming
We ain′t doing rugby no more
McIntyre's teaching us waltzing
Out on the gymnasium floor
Out on the gymnasium floor
McIntyre′s out of the army
You'll be slippered if you get it wrong
McIntyre's din booms loud in the gym
And we′ve only got a little short song
We′ve only got a little short song
And it's one-two-three two-two we′re all a disgrace
McIntyre tore us apart
And we danced with ourselves, when we'd all found a space
Waltzing with fear in our hearts
Waltzing with fear in our hearts
Comes the day of the final maneuvers
All of our heads are a-whirl
It′s gettin' much closer to D-day
This time we′re going to do it with girls
This time we're going to do it with girls
In the arena the ladies were waiting
A twelve year old partner to guide
Some matches were fixed, the rest of us mixed
And a fat girl got left at the side
A fat girl got left at the side
And it's one-two-three two-two we′re all a disgrace
McIntyre tore us apart
And we danced with ourselves, when we′d all found a space
Waltzing with fear in our hearts
Waltzing with fear in our hearts
When you come to my fights and I'm under the lights
And you see that my footwork is false
Don′t count me out, at the start of the bout
I'm just doing the secondary waltz
Doing the secondary waltz
