If his best advice was 'Just sit.', why did he write so much?
Since 08 July 1853, the only useful thing the Americans have done in Japan is to divest the Emperor of his Buddhist role. At least I thought. I have spoken to a couple people who think Japanese Buddhism is on it's way out. They well imagine a day in the not to distant future when there are no Buddhists in Japan. I have been wrong before.
One often listens to Japanese protestations of their lack of faith. The Americans killed it. Again.
