The hippie ethos

Lessons not learned

I read a CEO’s autobiography. He recounted visiting postwar Vietnam, pleased to see his logo on so many. He had done well. I was impressed with his success, until I began to praise him publicly. I learned his track record with women was not good, and that he donated much money to universities that already had too much.

I’m not proud to see people using AirPods, despite being the spark. I am grateful Apple made my AirPods. Apple stole and is stealing my ideas. Apple, the company and the Christian icon, is a leading force perpetuating a system which killed two million Vietnamese. The lessons learned did not include learning how to prevent American invasions of Grenada, Afghanistan, Kuwait, Iraq and countless more.

Recently I was staying in a hostel in Chiba. I met a young American of Korean ancestry there. She remarked that America had given the world the iPhone. I was not impressed. Yes, nice, I explained, I am glad you like your iPhone. Nonetheless, has anything changed? If anything has changed, is it better, or just different for the sake of being different?

The world is fine the way it is. It doesn’t need changing. Instead of “Think different.” how about just ‘Think’. Better yet, ‘Learn.’
