For some time, I have been asking myself the who, when and why of the Republican Party abandoning the fundamental goals of the party of progress and freedom.

"Sinful systems" cause the problems. If you can't see that, you are denying the potential, grace and beauty of humanity.
Progressive Republicans
Branch Rickey, the white Dodgers executive who signed Robinson to a contract and became his mentor, was an ardent Republican who believed in racial equality. Robinson supported and then worked for civil rights advocate [Republican] New York Gov. Nelson Rockefeller.

Jackie Robinson, the first African American to play Major League Baseball, left the Republican Party in 1968 because Mr. Nixon reneged on his 1960 pledge to Mr. Robinson to support civil rights.

Strictly speaking, Republicans abandoned the moral high ground in 1876. Perhaps, you could argue the Republicans became Republicans in name only (Rinos) in 1929. If you really want to be generous, you could claim Republicans ceased being Republicans in 1968, the year Jackie Robinson left the party. My vote is 1876.
